Learned Helplessness

Punished enough, you stop trying — even when you could win.

Grounded in the research on learned helplessness

the gist

When you can't escape something bad for long enough, you learn 'nothing I do matters' — and then you stop trying even after escape becomes possible. The cage door opens and you don't walk out.

the science

From Seligman and Maier's 1967 experiments: animals given inescapable shocks later failed to escape avoidable ones, while a control group escaped easily. It became a leading model for depression — though newer work flips it: passivity is the brain's DEFAULT under prolonged stress, and what you actually learn is control.
