Cognitive Dissonance
When your actions and beliefs clash, the belief is what bends.
Grounded in the research on cognitive dissonance
the gist
The mental discomfort of holding two clashing beliefs — or acting against what you claim to believe. The brain hates the tension and resolves it, almost always by quietly changing the BELIEF instead of the behavior.
the science
Coined by Leon Festinger in 1957. His classic study: people paid just $1 to lie that a boring task was fun later rated it as genuinely more fun than people paid $20 — the underpaid couldn't justify the lie with money, so they changed their real opinion to kill the tension.
