Dunning-Kruger Effect
Too unskilled to know you're unskilled.
Grounded in the research on the Dunning–Kruger effect
the gist
A bias where people who are bad at something massively overrate how good they are. The skill you'd need to recognize you're bad is the exact same skill you don't have yet — so the gap is invisible to you.
the science
Named after David Dunning and Justin Kruger, whose 1999 Cornell study had people rate themselves on logic, grammar and humor. The bottom-quartile performers thought they were above average. It’s a failure of metacognition — being bad at judging your own competence.
