What is tyrosinase, and why does every skincare brand secret

Tyrosinase is the rate-limiting enzyme that makes melanin — the pigment that tans you, freckles you, and leaves dark marks after a pimple (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). It's a copper-containing oxidase sitting inside your melanocytes. Inhibit it and you slow pigment production at the source. Every 'brightening,' 'dark spot,' or 'even tone' serum is, mechanistically, a tyrosinase-inhibition play. They just won't say the word.

How does it actually make melanin — what's the mechanism?

Tyrosinase runs the first two steps of the Raper-Mason melanogenesis pathway. It hydroxylates the amino acid L-tyrosine into L-DOPA, then oxidizes L-DOPA into dopaquinone. That quinone is reactive and cascades — basically autonomously — into eumelanin (brown/black) or pheomelanin (red/yellow). The two copper ions in the active site bind oxygen and do the redox work. Kill that copper-oxygen step and the whole downstream pigment factory stalls. That's why tyrosinase is the rate-limiting bottleneck, not melanin itself.
