The Break (Trousers)

The half-inch of fabric at your ankle that quietly tells everyone if your pants fit.

Grounded in the research on trouser break

what it actually is

The break is the fold or crease that forms where your trouser hem hits your shoe. Cut the leg long and the extra fabric piles up on the instep, bending into a little wrinkle. That wrinkle is the break. It's pure geometry: hem length minus the distance to the top of your shoe equals how much fabric has nowhere to go. More excess, more break.

the four grades

Tailors sort it into four. No break: the hem just kisses the shoe, clean line, zero fold. Quarter break: a faint dimple, maybe a quarter-inch. Half break: one soft crease grazing the top of the shoe. Full break: a generous fold that drapes over the laces and reaches down the back of the heel. Each one is just a different amount of length sitting on your foot.
