The Gift (Essai sur le don, 1925) is Marcel Mauss arguing that gift-giving is never free. In so-called archaic societies he found NO pure generosity and NO pure barter. Gifts are an exchange system that builds alliances, status, and obligation. He called it a total social fact: one act that is at once economic, legal, religious, and political. Translation: a present is a strategic move dressed up as kindness.
Run the three-obligation cycle
Mauss isolated the engine: three obligations. (1) Obligation to GIVE, refusing to give is declaring war. (2) Obligation to RECEIVE, refusing a gift is an insult and a snub. (3) Obligation to RECIPROCATE, you must pay back, usually with interest. That loop binds people into ongoing relationships. The debt is the point. A relationship with no outstanding obligation is a relationship that ends.
