The Consumption Constellation

You don't buy products. You buy a cluster of stuff that screams who you are.

Grounded in the research on Consumption constellation (consumer behaviour / Michael Solomon)

What it actually is

A consumption constellation is a CLUSTER of products, brands, and activities that together define a social role or identity. Coined by Michael R. Solomon in 1988. The Jeep + flannel + cold-brew + climbing chalk guy isn't choosing each thing separately. He's assembling a recognizable type. No single item carries the meaning. The set does.

The science under it

Solomon built on symbolic interactionism (Herbert Blumer) and Thorstein Veblen's status signaling. The mechanism: products are signs in a shared language. People READ your constellation to slot you into a category, and you READ your own to confirm you're playing the role right. Goods get their meaning from the company they keep, not from their function.
