Submalar projection is the fullness of the area just BELOW your cheekbone (the zygoma) and above your jaw. Malar projection is the bone itself; submalar is the soft-tissue pad under it. Full submalar reads as healthy and 'fed.' Hollow submalar reads gaunt, tired, older. It's why the same face can look starved at 8% bodyfat and sculpted at 12%.

This is clinical anatomy, not forum coinage. Plastic surgeons split midface implants into malar (over the bone) and submalar (in the hollow) since the 1990s, and 'submalar' is standard in craniofacial texts. The buccal fat pad and deep fat compartments fill it. Aging and crash diets drain those pads, which is why ozempic-face and submalar hollowing get talked about in the same breath.
