what it is
A structural hole is a gap between two groups of people who don't know each other but both know you. Each cluster talks to itself and not the other. You're the only link across the gap. That position is worth more than how many people you know, because the same info bounces around inside a closed group but you're the only one carrying it between two.
the model
Sociologist Ronald Burt formalized this in his 1992 book 'Structural Holes,' building on Mark Granovetter's weak-ties work. Burt's pitch: value comes from bridging gaps, not from being central inside one dense group. In a famous study of managers, the ones whose networks spanned more holes got better evaluations, faster promotions, and bigger ideas. Brokers across disconnected clusters consistently outperform people buried inside one tight clique.
