Strategic Visibility
being good is the table stakes; being seen by the right people is the whole game
Grounded in the research on Wikipedia: Impression management; Erving Goffman, 'The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life' (1959); related: Herminia Ibarra on visibility & sponsorship
[ ] what it actually is
strategic visibility is deciding who sees your work, and engineering it so the right people do. not louder — aimed. the quiet truth nobody tells you: output that nobody with power witnesses doesn't count. you can be the best on the team and get passed over because the people who allocate opportunity never saw it. this is about controlling your visibility surface — what's seen, by whom, in what frame.
[ ] the real science
it sits on Erving Goffman's 1959 'Presentation of Self,' where we manage the impression others form — and on later research by Herminia Ibarra showing visibility and a sponsor, not raw merit, predict who gets promoted. 'strategic visibility' as a packaged phrase is more LinkedIn-coach coinage than a single named study, so hold the term loosely. the underlying mechanics — impression management, sponsorship — are well-documented.
