Retinization
the boring adjustment phase that decides whether retinoids actually work for you
Grounded in the research on Dermatology literature on topical retinoids (tretinoin/retinol); retinization as the adaptation/acclimation phase
step 1 - name it
retinization is the break-in period your skin goes through when you start a retinoid (tretinoin, adapalene, retinol). first few weeks your skin throws a tantrum: dryness, flaking, redness, sometimes a breakout surge. that's not the product failing. it's your skin cells learning to turn over faster. push past it and the same molecule that wrecked you week one is what clears your skin month three.
step 2 - the actual science
retinoids are vitamin A derivatives. tretinoin (Retin-A) got FDA-approved for acne in 1971, then Kligman's group at UPenn showed in the 1980s it also reverses photoaging. mechanism: they bind retinoic acid receptors, crank up keratinocyte turnover and collagen production. "retinization" is just the clinical word for the adaptation window while your barrier recalibrates to that accelerated turnover. unglamorous, real, and well-documented unlike most looksmaxxing terms.
