The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the body's master stress loop: hypothalamus fires CRH, pituitary fires ACTH, adrenals dump cortisol. Turns out skin runs a local copy of the whole thing. Keratinocytes, melanocytes and sebocytes make CRH, ACTH and cortisol on-site, no brain required. Mapped largely by Andrzej Slominski (since ~2000): skin is a fully self-contained neuroendocrine organ.
Same hormones, made in the cell
Skin cells carry the actual machinery: CRH and its receptor CRHR1, POMC (the precursor that gets cut into ACTH), and the enzymes CYP11A1, CYP11B1 and 11beta-HSD that build cortisol from cholesterol locally. UV, barrier damage and psychological stress all switch this on. The skin isn't just receiving cortisol from your blood; it's synthesizing its own and responding to it autocrine-style.
