Orthotropics

the tongue-posture theory that swallowed looksmaxxing tiktok

Grounded in the research on Orthotropics (John Mew) — Wikipedia

the setup

orthotropics is the claim that where you rest your tongue, lips and jaw reshapes your whole face. resting tongue on the roof of your mouth, lips sealed, teeth lightly together, breathe through your nose. do it forever and supposedly your face grows up-and-forward: sharper jaw, fuller cheekbones, hunter eyes. that's the pitch. it's the parent theory behind every "mewing" clip you've seen.

where it came from

british orthodontist John Mew coined it in the 1980s and his son Mike Mew turned it into a youtube cult — "mewing" is literally named after them. but be clear: orthotropics is fringe. mainstream orthodontics never accepted it, and in 2019 the British general dental council struck Mike Mew off the register. that's not a footnote. the people who invented this got professionally sanctioned over it.
