NPC theory is the online idea that most people are 'non-player characters' — background extras running pre-written scripts, no inner monologue, no original thoughts, just repeating whatever their group feeds them. you're the player with real agency; everyone else is filler. it borrows the gaming term for the villagers who say the same line forever, then aims it at actual humans. flattering to believe. that's the catch.
the origin
this is a meme, not science — be clear about that. it blew up on 4chan in 2018, then got weaponized as an insult. what gave it fake legs: a 2020 study by psychologist Russell Hurlburt finding people vary a lot in how often they 'hear' an inner voice, and some report little verbal thought. the internet warped that into 'NPCs have no inner life.' Hurlburt never said that. no inner monologue does not mean no thinking.
