Network centrality is a number for how important your position in a group is — measured by the wiring, not your vibe. Picture everyone as dots and every relationship as a line between them. Centrality scores which dots actually matter to how the whole thing runs. You can be loud and likable and still sit at the dead edge. You can be quiet and still be the node everything routes through.
where did the science come from?
Sociologist Linton Freeman nailed it down in his 1978-79 paper 'Centrality in Social Networks,' splitting one fuzzy idea into three hard ones. Degree: how many direct ties you have. Closeness: how few hops it takes you to reach everyone. Betweenness: how often you sit on the shortest path between two others. This is real graph theory, replicated for decades — the same math Google's PageRank runs on links. Not a guru coinage.
