Mewing

press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and supposedly sculpt your jaw. mostly cope.

Grounded in the research on Wikipedia: Mewing (orthotropics); John Mew & Mike Mew

so what even is this?

mewing is parking your whole tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, teeth lightly together, lips sealed, and breathing through your nose all day. the claim: hold that posture long enough and your jawline sharpens, your cheekbones come forward, your face 'grows up and out.' it costs nothing, which is exactly why TikTok ran with it. it's a posture habit dressed up as facial surgery.

where did it actually come from?

british orthodontist John Mew coined 'orthotropics' decades ago, arguing modern soft diets and mouth-breathing wreck facial growth. his son Mike Mew turned it into the YouTube 'mewing' movement around 2018. heads up: this is fringe, not mainstream dentistry. the British orthodontic board actually stripped Mike Mew of his membership in 2019 over his promotion of it. the name itself is internet coinage, not a peer-reviewed term.
