What Hand Actually Is
Hand — or handfeel — is the aggregate sensory response you get when you touch a fabric. Softness, drape, weight, warmth, slip, grip, crispness. It's not one variable, it's a cluster. The textile industry has used the term since at least the 1920s, and it's still the primary way buyers, designers, and mills communicate quality. No machine fully replicates it. Your hands are the instrument.
The Science Behind It
In 1972, Japanese textile engineer Sueo Kawabata built the KES-F system — a suite of instruments that measure bending rigidity, surface friction, compressibility, and tensile behavior. His 1980 paper established the Kawabata Evaluation System as the first credible attempt to quantify hand objectively. He translated tactile sensation into six mechanical properties. Researchers still use KES-F today. But even Kawabata admitted the system approximates, not replaces, expert human judgment.
