What It Is

Fabric memory is a textile's ability to return to its original shape after being crushed, folded, or stretched. High memory = bounces back. Low memory = stays creased. It's not about thickness or quality in the broad sense — it's a structural property baked into the fiber itself. Wool has it. Linen doesn't. Polyester has it chemically engineered in. The Science Behind It

Roger Millward and researchers at the Wool Industries Research Association in Leeds pinned down wrinkle recovery mechanics in the 1950s–60s. Fibers deform under stress by breaking and re-forming hydrogen bonds between polymer chains. Elastic recovery depends on how fast and completely those bonds re-set. Keratin in wool has disulfide cross-links that act like springs. Cotton and linen lack them, so deformation is semi-permanent until washed. That's the whole story.
