Enclothed Cognition

The coat doesn't just signal who you are. It changes how your brain works.

the idea

Clothes don't just change how people read you. They change how you think, focus and perform from the inside. Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky named this enclothed cognition in a 2012 paper in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. The claim: what you wear quietly reaches into your own head, not just everyone else's eyes. The garment you put on this morning is doing psychological work whether you noticed or not.

the lab coat

Their headline study was simple. Students did a selective-attention task, a Stroop test, while wearing a white coat. One group was told it was a doctor's coat. Another was told the exact same coat was a painter's. The doctor group made fewer errors. Same fabric, same buttons, different story in their heads, measurably sharper attention. The meaning attached to the coat, not the coat itself, moved the needle.
