the experiment
Roy Baumeister's team (1998) sat hungry people next to warm cookies and made some of them eat radishes instead. The cookie-resisters quit a later unsolvable puzzle way sooner — about 8 minutes vs 21. The read: resisting temptation spent something, and there was less left for the next fight.
