What it actually is
Azelaic acid (AzA) is a saturated dicarboxylic acid, formula HOOC(CH2)7COOH. Not some lab flex. It naturally occurs in wheat, rye and barley, and your own skin yeast Malassezia furfur produces it. Sold as 15-20% prescription gel/foam/cream and 10% OTC. In 2023 it was the 309th most-prescribed drug in the US, 200k+ scripts. Quietly everywhere.
It kills acne bacteria without breeding resistance
AzA is bacteriostatic against Cutibacterium acnes (old name C. acnes / P. acnes), the bug driving acne. It disrupts bacterial metabolism and membrane pH, so the bacteria stop multiplying. Key part: it does this WITHOUT fostering antibiotic resistance, unlike topical antibiotics. That's the whole reason derms keep reaching for it.
