Antifragility

Fragile things break under stress. Antifragile things get stronger from it. Big difference.

Read Taleb First

Nassim Taleb coined antifragility in his 2012 book. The concept is simple: fragile things break under volatility, robust things survive it, antifragile things actually improve from it. Muscles, immune systems, startups that find product-market fit through repeated failure — all antifragile. The financial system before 2008 was fragile. It looked stable. Then it wasn't. Understand the difference or you'll keep confusing stability for safety.

Embrace Small Losses

Antifragility is built through optionality and exposure to small, survivable stressors. A portfolio that never loses anything is probably hiding risk somewhere. Taleb's barbell strategy: put 90% in ultra-safe assets, 10% in high-upside bets with capped downside. You can't lose everything, but you can win big. The key insight — asymmetric payoffs. Small frequent losses are the price of occasional enormous gains. Stop trying to eliminate all volatility.
