Step 1: What It Is
A centaur is a human-AI team that outperforms either working alone. The name comes from chess: after Deep Blue beat Kasparov in 1997, freestyle chess tournaments opened the field to any combination of players and engines. Small teams of amateur humans using chess software consistently beat both grandmasters playing alone and the strongest engines running without human guidance. The hybrid was stronger than either pure form.
Step 2: Where It Came From
Garry Kasparov coined the term and documented the effect in his 2017 book 'Deep Thinking'. The 2005 Playchess.com freestyle tournament was the clearest proof: the winning entry wasn't a supercomputer or a grandmaster. It was two amateur players using three chess engines in parallel, coordinating the engines' outputs with their own positional judgment. Process over raw talent.
