Quiet Luxury
no logos. if you have to ask, you're not the audience.
Grounded in the research on Thorstein Veblen, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899); 'quiet luxury' popularized as a 2023 trend term (Succession-era press, Business of Fashion)
[ ] what it actually is
Status without the logo. Expensive clothes designed to read as plain — no monogram, no badge, just cut, fabric, and fit only insiders clock. Think The Row, Loro Piana, a $600 unbranded tee. The flex is that you don't NEED the logo, and that only people who already know the codes can even tell. It's a velvet rope made of taste instead of a price sticker.
[ ] the real science
Heads up: 'quiet luxury' is a 2023 marketing buzzword, not a study — it blew up around Succession's wardrobe. But the mechanism is old. Veblen (1899) called this 'inconspicuous consumption': once everyone can buy the loud version, the real elite switch to signals the masses can't read. Berger and Ward's 2010 research formalized it — high-status groups drop obvious branding for 'subtle signals' that only fellow insiders decode.
