Performative Authenticity

the most calculated move in the room is looking like you're not calculating

Grounded in the research on Erving Goffman, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959); Theodor Adorno, The Jargon of Authenticity (1964); Wikipedia: Authenticity (philosophy)

[ ] what it actually is

It's performing 'realness' as a style. You're not being unfiltered — you're staging the LOOK of unfiltered because raw and honest sells harder than polished now. The messy-bun 'get ready with me,' the 'i wasn't gonna post this but.' The vulnerability that's clearly been edited. Authenticity got turned into a costume, and the costume is 'no costume.' That's the whole trick.

[ ] the real science

Erving Goffman (1959) laid the base: everyone runs an act, choosing what the audience sees. The sharper hit is Theodor Adorno's 'Jargon of Authenticity' (1964) — the moment 'authentic' becomes a brand word, it's already fake. Heads up: 'performative authenticity' as a named term is more of a critics-and-creators coinage than a single landmark study, so hold the exact label loosely. The mechanism underneath it is solid and old.
